"and i look at it. and it's this awful romance novel. and- the love interest is someone in rocket. like, this writer has just taken his whole appearance and everything and made him into this mafia boss. like one of the really stereotypical ones."

they're not about to say any names, just because they don't know if chu-e would even know who they're talking about. and because the last time they had seen said rocket member, he had been terrifying and all claws and they would rather not draw his wrath by talking about it.

Chu-e had been, at one point, mostly ignoring kasper thaler. The youth had been rambling about a book or something. Chu-e had a lot of important work to do, which right now meant mostly looking over heat maps and reading data as he helped the other more sneaky types control the flow of the battlefield.[break][break]

Then they had started talking about Legally Distinct Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

By this point, Chu-e had sat down, hands crossed on his lap, as he realized that The author of The Shadow Boss had not only lived in Sootopolis but had worked in a shitty coffee shop.[break][break]

"So," Is what he finally says, from his seat on a crate of some sharp implements. "did you finish the book, though? Or just part of it?"[break][break]

It's asked with more innocence than he intends.

kasper, luckily, hadn't even noticed that chu-e had been ignoring them at first. it didn't really matter, anyway, because by the time he had decided to actually listen, they had decided they needed to get it out there. mostly because it was so awful and they hated it.

they blink at his question, now that their theory about why kyogre destroyed their workplace was finished, and then wrinkled their nose at the idea. "no. i didn't even read part of it." maybe they would have out of irony if the rocket underbosses didn't scare the shit out of them, but the opportunity had passed.

"i did tell his husband about it, though. he probably read it." maybe they should ask Tempest Quinn for his review on the series if he had actually bought them. all six of them.

"Oh, you did?" Chu-e huffs out a small laugh. He shakes his head lightly. "They probably reenacted it. The nasty fucks." But it's said with some affection.[break][break]

Standing, slowly, Chu-e groans softly. His joints were starting to hurt. It wasn't often he was called out of his little office/dungeon on the Sub for missions anymore. The slim laptop is snapped closed.[break][break]

"My data's done compiling. You ready to escort me over to site three for pass off?" Chu-e wasn't looking forward to extended time with fern delaney. Maybe if he was lucky, the Admin would be busy and he could fuck off without being tempted to be a cunt.

if there was anything kasper didn't want to think about, it was that. the affection in which their fellow rocket says it doesn't pass over unoticed, though, and they're much more quick to focus on that than whatever their bosses did. "you know cillian?"

he doesn't seem that scared of cillian, which...is odd, but kasper's plans to ask him about it are put on hold when he closes the laptop and asks them if they're ready to escort him. "yeah. ready to go whenever you are."
[break][break]
and then, just as quickly as it would have taken them to breathe, curiosity gets the better of them. "how did you meet him?" just as quickly, they glance over, trying to judge if they should share just how much he scares them. if it isn't obvious already, from the way they're avoiding mentioning him too much like he'll pop from the shadows behind them.

actually- as the thought passes their mind, they send a quick glance back. just in case.

Chu-e and kasper thaler are on the move before he bothers to answer the other. Kasper must have been newer to not recognize him, or at least know his name on paper. The Kanto Rockets and the Hoenn ones tended to remember him for different crimes.[break][break]

"First time we met, I stabbed him." Chu-e motions vaguely to the area he thinks Cillian Quinn showed him once. "I didn't even remember it. He was nothing to me back then, just another body to bleed." He frowns slightly as he remembers it. His time as a Beast in Kanto was isolating.[break][break]

"When I came to Hoenn, Walsh welcomed me into the organization. I proved my knowledge valuable, so Cillian and I worked closely together for years. He's my best friend." Or, he was at least. The sting of his own cowardice after his rule from Necrozma kept him from the other.[break][break]

Hoenn was now isolating in a different way.[break][break]

Before Chu-e allows himself to dwell on things that will make him unhappy, sharp blue eyes cut into Kasper.[break][break]

"What about you? You seem pretty familiar with him."

he doesn't answer them at first, and for a long moment kasper has to wonder if they've broken some unspoken rocket code. maybe there's some rule out there to not ask how someone else knows cillian quinn if they're not prepared for the answer, and they just asked anyways. they're pretty sure they're not prepared for the answer.

they don't realize just how unprepared they are until chu-e speaks up again. "what?" they don't mean to laugh, and it's not at chu-e, but more out of genuine surprise, and they're quick to shut up when they realize he's serious. it seems too detailed of a tale to be made up, even if the subject in question doesn't line up with what they think of him.

neither does the knowledge that the man they're escorting is his best friend. maybe they're missing something. before they have the chance to ask anything else, the questions are being directed to them, and then it's kasper's turn to fall silent for a moment before they shrug.

"i don't really know him as well. most of it's through temp." and even that is sort of a stretch, if they're being honest. feeling like they have to explain, suddenly, they continue. "temp's my...mentor? in rocket? sort of?"
